Frederic Ozanam Appeal Logo.png

Inspired by our founder and building on the success of Ozanam Place, we have created a special appeal.

With these funds we can provide direct, life-changing assistance to individuals & families struggling to meet their basic needs, such as:

  • Grocery cards or food items

  • Coverage of medical prescriptions

  • Funds for shelter

  • Other pressing needs

For over a century, the SSVP – Halifax has stood as a quiet but powerful force for good—offering direct, compassionate support to neighbours in Halifax, Fall River, Colchester County, Lunenburg County, Wolfville, and Amherst.

Each day 320 devoted volunteers respond to urgent needs delivering meals, helping with rent, covering overdue utility and medical bills, and bringing comfort to those facing crisis.

At the heart of our mission is something rare and deeply human: the home visit. We meet people where they are—in their homes, in their struggles, and in their stories. We listen, we pray, and we offer both emotional and practical support. This personal, face-to-face care is what makes our work transformative.

In 2025, the need has grown more urgent than ever. Economic instability and an escalating housing crisis are forcing more individuals and families - many for the first time - to reach out for help. As demand increases, our resources are stretched to the limit.

That’s why we’re asking for your partnership.

A gift to the Frédéric Ozanam Legacy Appeal will help ensure we can continue to respond swiftly and compassionately.

Stories from Our Neighbours

“I’ve been sleeping on friends' couches, on the streets, and in shelters. I’m diabetic & have serious foot problems, so I go through shoes real fast because I’m always moving around. I needed shoes that would work with my foot issues, ones that help with pronation & keep my feet dry. The HPC office helped me out and got me two pairs of shoes that fit perfectly.

I can't even explain how much something like that changes my life. It’s made a world of difference.”

“The pandemic took away our home and left my wife and me feeling hopeless. But SSVP was there, helping us secure housing and employment, and, most importantly, restoring our sense of hope and purpose. There were no obstacles, no questions—just unwavering compassion.”

Justin K., Halifax, 2025

"A few months ago, I made the difficult decision to leave an abusive relationships. I quickly exhausted my savings, but with the Society's support, I was able to receive assistance for rent, grocery gift cards, and even tuition fees. This help has been instrumental in allowing me to pursue education and secure employment in my field, ultimately paving the way for greater financial stability and a better future for my daughter and me."
