Social Justice

Social Justice and the Work of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul

Beyond providing direct assistance, we are guided by a vision of a more just and compassionate society—one that challenges the systems and circumstances that create poverty, suffering, and exclusion. Inspired by Pope Francis’ call for “a more just, equitable, and compassionate world, where the dignity of every person is respected and protected,” we strive to respond not only to the symptoms of poverty but also to its root causes.

Our Social Justice Committee focuses on several key areas that reflect this mission:

Ministry to the incarcerated and previously incarcerated – supporting reintegration, dignity, and community connection for those affected by the justice system.

Caring for immigrants in exploitative labour situations – advocating for fair treatment, safety, and workplace rights.

Housing issues – addressing barriers to safe, affordable, and stable housing for individuals and families.

Each of these focus areas reflects our commitment to accompany those who are marginalized, advocate for their well-being, and respond to injustice with both charity and courage. Through education, advocacy, relationship-building, and collaboration, the Social Justice Committee actively addresses these issues and works toward meaningful, long-term change.

The Social Justice Committee is a Standing Committee of the Halifax Particular Council.

Working for social justice involves identifying root causes of poverty and contributing to their elimination; affirming the dignity of each human being as created in God’s image; seeing social justice issues from the perspective of those in need; opposing discrimination of all kinds; fostering new attitudes of respect and empathy for those served in the mission of charity; and looking towards sustainable development and protection of the environment for the benefit of future generations.
